Ravi “Ravi B” Bissambhar, reigning joint Chutney Soca Monarch, said yesterday, he was pleased the competition was back on after it was cancelled owing to lack of funding.

Ravi B spoke to Newsday after performing at the National Carnival Commission’s (NCC) launch of Carnival at the VIP Lounge, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

Asked how he felt about the event being back on, he said, “I am very happy to see that the Government took the initiative to bring it back and fund the event in such a grand way. I must commend them.

“That is an excellent move, because Chutney Soca is a very important flavour to Carnival. I know a lot of people were looking forward to Chutney Soca Monarch, in particular, and seeing the crossover bands like Karma in Carnival.”

George Singh, the event’s organiser, received $1 million for this year’s competition after he announced its cancellation due to a major cut in state funding and an initial offer of $300,000 by the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB).

Even with the show back on, whether Ravi B will defend his crown or not remains a mystery.

He said, “That’s a secret. A lot of people are asking me what I am doing. But it remains to be seen, because I really feel like I want to give all the younger ones a chance. Every single year Rikki Jai is there, KI is there, Ravi B is there.”
