GUNNED DOWN: Jeremiah Stephen, shot dead in his girlfriend’s home in Claxton Bay yesterday.

Jeremiah Stephen was shot dead yesterday morning as he lay at his girlfriend’s Claxton Bay home sleeping off a night of partying with friends. Stephen, 23, also known as “G5”, was killed at Asha George’s Tambu Hill, Springvale home.

According to reports, George left the house at 10.30 am to buy something at a nearby parlour. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a white Nissan B14 car stop at the entrance to the street. Several men got out and ran up the hill where they entered the house and shot Stephen dead. George was too distraught to speak to reporters, saying she had not yet processed what had happened.

Stephen’s mother Doreen Stephen was brought to the scene by co-workers and left shortly after her son’s body was removed by undertakers. She also declined to speak to reporters. Other relatives said Stephen moved to Claxton Bay from his original residence at Lodge Street in Couva several months ago.

He was described as a quiet, easy-going person. The daylight murder caused quite a stir in the community and many residents gathered on hearing the news. A resident, who asked not to be identified, said she could not believe the crime spree plaguing the country had reached Claxton Bay.

“This used to be the quietest place to live, but look at the state of things now,” the woman said as she gestured to the crime scene. “Is only outsiders would come here to make this kinda trouble. Nobody from Springvale would interfere with them outside fellas.” No arrest has been made and investigations are continuing.
