Nyron Goordial, a Barrackpore farmer, has been denied bail after appearing before a Siparia Magistrate for possession of 12 illegal firearms and over 2000 rounds of ammo at his Barrackpore home.

A Barrackpore farmer charged with having 12 guns and 2,410 rounds of ammunition will spend Christmas in jail.

Nyron Goordial, 40, was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before senior magistrate Margaret Alert in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court. He was arrested on Wednesday at his home at Jaipaulsingh Street, Barrackpore where the items were allegedly found in a bedroom.

The charges were laid indictably by Sgt Terrence Victor of the Southern Division Task Force and Goordial was not called upon to plead.

Six pistols, four revolvers, two rifles and the ammunition were presented in court.

Attorney Ravi Diptee told Alert his client was a supervisor at a company before he resigned. He said Goordial suffers from a chronic back injury, had surgery in 2014 but to date still experiences pain from the injury.

Goordial, he said, is a divorcee with no children. He farms tilapia and is also involved in charitable activities in his community.

Diptee said Goordial was also involved in hosting an upcoming Christmas event in the area.

Prosecutor Sgt Starr Jacob, in objecting to bail, said the nature of the offences was serious because of the quantum, and Goordial did not have sufficient ties, so she believed he was a flight risk.

Goordial was advised to apply to a judge in chambers for bail and remanded at the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca.

The matter was transferred to the Princes Town Magistrates Court and adjourned to Wednesday.
