Former county medical officer of health for Tobago and former general manager of primary care services in the Tobago Regional Health Authority Dr Mentor Melville has died.

Melville, 76, suffered from lung, heart and kidney issues and died on Sunday shortly after 10 pm at the Scarborough General Hospital.

He was well known for his work in non-communicable disease research in Tobago.

On October 5, his family appealed for blood, saying he needed it urgently and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit of the Port of Spain General Hospital with an undisclosed illness, expecting to undergo emergency surgery.

Sources said Melville returned to Tobago after successful surgery but remained at the Scarborough hospital for observation and further testing.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be made.
