Judge denies request to release Piarco heist suspect

A High Court judge yesterday refused to order the release of a suspect in the $5 million Piarco robbery on a habeas corpus application filed on Thursday.

But if he is not charged by 10 am tomorrow, then police must set him free.

In the San Fernando High Court, Justice Frank Seepersad heard evidence from police investigating the robbery that the reason for detaining the suspect was that the police are awaiting certain confirmation from Central Bank.

Last week Wednesday, armed bandits escaped with an estimated $5 million in cash from a cargo cart at Piarco Airport. Several suspects were held and have since been detained at the

Maraval police station. One of the suspects, a 32-year-old mason from Longdenville, Chaguanas, was held hours after the robbery and has been in custody since with no charges against him.
