Thet unemployed Whim man who escaped from custody on Monday has been recaptured. The 25-year-old man, according to official reports, was captured in the bush at Whim around 7.45 pm on Monday. Newsday was told that Samuel Maharaj escaped custody sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

He was arrested last Friday in relation to charges of firearm and ammunition, robbery and housebreaking and was expected to appear before a Scarborough magistrate on Monday.

However, a police source told Newsday that Maharaj was discovered missing around 9 am on Monday, as checks were being made on detainees who needed to be taken to court. On being recaptured he was taken to the Scarborough police station where charges were expected to be laid. Investigations are ongoing.
