Police foil burglary, baby milk thieves on the run

Central Division police officers foiled a burglary at a supermarket where thieves hammered a hole in the wall and attempted to escape with over $100,000 worth of items including baby milk and wipes. Police believe the perpetrators are either parents or guardians of a toddler as they attempted to steal milk specifically targeted for the six to 12 months age group.

Investigators said the supermarket’s shelves were stocked with milk for other age groups but none of those were stolen. Police said, on Tuesday night Pooran Ramroop locked up his supermarket at Yard Street, Chaguanas and left. At about 4am yesterday, police received information that a supermarket was being broken into. A team from the Crime Patrol and Chaguanas CID, which included Cpl Gopaul, police constables Rodney, Mohammed and Hosein, immediately responded. On seeing the police, the men who were masked fled the scene. Police recovered four tins of Lactogen baby milk, two boxes of Pampers wipes, 25 bottles of Johnny Walker Black, three bottles of Double Black, seven bottles of Moet and several bottles of other premium alcoholic beverages.

Also found were cartons of cigarettes, meat, flour and other foodstuff. The items, police said, were already packed in bags to be taken away. Police also found a quantity of cash in a bag, which the bandits had also dropped while running away.
