STACY MOORE

A 56-year-old man is expected to appear before a Couva magistrate today charged with the murder of Ganesh Samaroo, a father of two. On Sunday evening, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Honore-Paul advised police to charge the man.

The man, reports said, had surrendered to police hours after Samaroo, his relative, was chopped on December 5. Samaroo, 38, died in front of his Perseverance Road, Couva home. According to relatives, the suspect, who lives next door to Samaroo, began cursing him and his mother at about 7.15 pm that day. Samaroo, they said, went out to try to calm the man but the dispute escalated. Samaroo, police said, went out into the road where he was confronted by the man who chopped him on the arm. He tried to escape but the man chased him and chopped him again as he lay bleeding in a drain in front his home. Samaroo, a truck driver, died on the spot. An autopsy on Wednesday confirmed Samaroo died from shock and haemorrhage consistent with multiple chop wounds.
