CAL: No link to guns

Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) is distancing itself from a haul of highly sophisticated firearms which were found and seized in Florida at the Miami International Airport on November 13.

The guns were allegedly destined to take a CAL flight from the airport to Kingston, Jamaica.

“The airline is in no way associated with media reports relating to guns allegedly seized in the State of Florida at the Miami International Airport” said the airline’s communications department in a release sent to the media.

“The airline also confirms that no contraband items were carried or pre-arranged to be carried on any of its flights. Caribbean Airlines reiterates that it adheres to the strictest security standards in keeping with the statutory requirements of all jurisdictions into which the airline operates”

CAL officials also said the matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities.

In November, Customs and Border Protection officers and the Outbound Enforcement Team while conducting a routine inspection and came across a shipment with two blue shipping containers which were said to hold personal effects. Customs officers inspected the shipment and found a massive cache of weapons among various food items, cat litter, a four-door dresser and a television stand.

The cache contained 115 pistols, 2 rifles, 139 magazines, 103 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .357 ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 ammunition, 24 rounds of .40 ammunition, 40 rounds of .223 ammunition, 9 handgun back straps, 5 magazine parts, 3 pistol grips, 3 butt stocks, and weapons parts.

Shipping documents listed the consignor as a woman from Pompano Beach Florida and was due to be exported from Miami to Montego Bay, Jamaica via Caribbean Airlines flight BW8040 on November 20.
