Man freed of marijuana charge

An Arima businessman has been freed of charges of possession of marijuana for trafficking and possession of ammunition.

Senior Magistrate Indrani Cedeno this week discharged 29 year-old Amin Singh, of Wallerfield, in the Arima First Court after his attorneys Reynold Waldrop and Jeron Joseph argued that the prosecution’s evidence from three police officers raised doubt and contained several inconsistencies.

The magistrate agreed and freed Singh.

Singh was arrested on November 16, 2007, after police searched his home.

Police alleged they found five bullets hidden in the motor area of a refrigerator and that Singh told them he forgot he had put them there since before Carnival that year.

They also alleged they found three green plastic bags of marijuana hidden in banana trees on Singh’s property and that he told them it was his and he had bought it the day before. The police also claimed Singh said he sold his car to buy the marijuana.

The drugs were said to have weighed 7,769 kilogrammes.
