Congrats, you make us proud, Reema

THE EDITOR: Has the concept of honouring achievements or achievers in TT become obsolete or selective? Public acknowledgment, honouring achievement/achievers are designed to motivate others?

I have read on many occasions of our NGOs and women’s groups publicly or otherwise paying tribute to some of our female achievers for exceptional accomplishments on the global landscape.

But sadly, I flipped through the archives of all local newspapers to see what was written or said by these groups about Reema Carmona, wife of the President, receiving the prestigious Global Female Impact Leadership Award, and found no tributes, just news reports by some media.

Returning to Trinidad two week ago, I read about Carmona’s achievement while flicking through the pages of the international magazine Amazon Watch. As a matter of fact, the magazine authorised a special edition dedicated to Carmona and five global First Ladies who received the award this year. Not only was it a special edition but Carmona received the most coverage — seven pages were dedicated to her.

Another international magazine, The Diplomat, based in Denmark I believe, also featured Carmona’s award on their online and hard-copy editions. I came across many other glowing tributes to Carmona’s accomplishment on official documents and newsletters, but no such tributes in her homeland.

I further discovered that both President and Mrs Carmona are well known in the global village and are in demand for their advocacy in many areas.

As a TT national, I feel proud, especially when travelling, to talk and even boast of our nationals’ global accomplishments and in this case President and Mrs Carmona. I also read about President Carmona dazzling the United Nations Environment Assembly with his speech on December 5.They are exceptional people.

Congratulations, Reema Carmona, you make us proud.
