Girl, 2, shot by stray bullet

STACY MOORE

A mentally challenged man, 32, and a two-year-old girl are now warded in serious condition at San Fernando General Hospital following a shooting in Moruga yesterday morning.

The toddler sustained injuries to her leg and neck after she was hit by a stray bullet while the man was shot to the head. Last evening, police continued searching for a 66-year-old man who is now on the run.

According to police, at about 7.30 am, the older man had an argument with his son at the family’s home on Penal Rock Road. The quarrel escalated and the man, a retiree of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, went into his bedroom and returned with a firearm and began shooting. Reports said the toddler was playing in the yard of her home nearby, when a bullet struck her.

Eyewitnesses said the infant screamed out in pain and fell to the ground. When relatives rushed to her side, she was bleeding. Emergency Health Services was contacted and the man and the toddler were taken to Princes Town Health Facility and transferred to San Fernando General Hospital where they underwent surgery. The shotgun was later recovered at the back of the suspect’s home.

Moruga police are investigating.
