Erosion threat to our home

THE EDITOR: On September 28, when we had all the heavy rains and flood due to the Santa Cruz River overflowing its banks, we lost our retaining wall and 30 per cent of the property. The erosion continues to this day and is now threatening the foundation of our home.

The next day we were visited by the ODPM and the regional corporation for San Juan. They reviewed the damage and said it was an emergency. On October 6, Ministry of Works officials reviewed the damage and left. On October 26, we were visited by the ministry again and the MP for the region. They reviewed the damage and also agreed it was an emergency.

We are retirees in our 80s. We do not have the funds to repair this wall and the land continues to fall into the river, exposing us to all the bad elements — both human and natural — so that our safety is at risk. We are appealing, begging, the ODPM, the Ministry of Works, the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and all those who visited our property to please help us. We are also making a special appeal to our MP, Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, to please give this ... us ... some attention.
