Mom seeks answers

The mother of a 24-year-old man who was slain in Champs Fleurs on Saturday is now among hundreds of parents seeking answers on why their sons were killed.

Hakeem Bartholomew, a father of two, was shot dead while walking on Mt D’Or Road at about 9 pm while on his way to visit one of his children. Residents heard gunshots and found Bartholomew, of Coconut Drive, Morvant, on the road with gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital where he died. Relatives yesterday described him as humble and respectful. “I raised him up differently,” said his mother, who did not want her name published. “I think I may have raised him up too nice. He grew up soft and humble. He called all my friends ‘Mr’ and ‘Miss.’ I am not going to say he was a saint or anything, but he worked for everything he had. And he wasn’t in anything. Maybe if he grew up a little harder and was more aggressive, he would be alive today.”

She said Bartholomew was a security guard with SWAT Security Ltd and had applied for a government job to better provide for his children. The murder toll up to press time was 439, compared to 414 for the same period last year.
