Murder accused escapes from court

Police were last night on the search for a murder accused who escaped police custody yesterday morning. The man has been identified as Hamilton Small.

Police sources told Newsday that Small was being taken to the Arima Magistrates Court for the continuation of his case. Sources explained that the space where prison officers park their transport is very narrow and it is difficult for more than one or two security personnel to be present while the prisoner is being taken to the holding cell at the court.

Newsday was told the prisoner used this to his advantage and made a dash for freedom as he was being taken to the holding cell. He jumped over a nearby wall and ran off.

Police chased him but Small was too fast and got away.

Police later found the shackles with which he was secured in a nearby yard. They believe he managed to undo the lock before he was taken out of the transport.

There were unconfirmed reports that Small was seen in the Carapo area shortly after his daring dash for freedom.
