Man in court on shooting charges

A man who was shot during a home invasion a week ago appeared before a Couva magistrate on Monday charged with shooting a man five months ago. Limping and holding a pair of crutches, Peter Williams, 31, appeared before senior magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran to answer six charges.

The first alleged that on July 30, at Dow Village, California Williams had a firearm not being the holder of a firearms users licence. The second is that he had a firearm with intent to endanger lives. The third and fourth charges are that Williams had ammunition not being the holder of a firearms users licence and to endanger lives.

The fifth charge was that he wounded a man with intent to cause grievous bodily harm while the final charge alleged that he maliciously damaged the victim’s Nissan B12 car. All charges were laid indictably by Sgt Ken Ali of Couva CID and Williams was not called on to enter any pleas. Attorney Steven Mawer said his client is a father of three including twins.

In his bail application, Mawer said his client was the victim of a home invasion on Friday when he was shot in the leg. Mawer said the injury prevents Williams from extending his leg, he has great difficulty walking and using the toilet on his own. Williams, the attorney said, is due to undergo surgery to have the bullet removed.

Mawer said Williams has a fixed place of abode and is in no position to leave the country. In granting bail, Magistrate Ramsaran said while he sympathised with the accused man’s circumstances, the allegations are severe and there is need to increase the bail amount.

“He is going to suffer a great deal of discomfort but you also have to bear in mind the nature of the charges,” Ramsaran said as he granted Williams $200,000 bail and adjourned the case.
