Attempted robbery of ATM machines at FCB Arima

Two burglars who cut a hole in the roof of the Arima branch of First Citizens Bank (FCB) between Sunday night and early yesterday morning, failed in their attempt to remove cash from two automated teller machines.

The incident was captured on the bank’s surveillance camera but the faces of the burglars were not visible. The only thing they were able to take was a bulletproof vest belonging to one of the security officers assigned to the bank.

According to reports, at about 7.15 am yesterday an employee arrived for work and saw a hole in the roof.

Arima police were called and Senior Supt Daniel, Supt David, ASP Edwards, Insp Birch and others went to the bank and carried out enquiries.

They discovered the burglars attempted to tamper with the machines but were unsuccessful because an alarm was triggered. As the burglars were fleeing the scene, one of them took possession of a bulletproof vest and they escaped through the same hole in the roof from where they entered.

On September 24, burglars using a blow torch cut a hole on the eastern side of the Montrose branch of FCB then cut open a vault and escaped with over $3.5 million.

The robbery was only discovered at 9 am the following day when bank officials received a call that there was a gaping hole in a wall.

After that robbery, an attempt was made to rob another machine at Caparo and a Valencia labourer was detained after investigations by acting Senior Supt Ajith Persad and a team of police.

Yesterday, ACP Irwin Hackshaw said with the Christmas season now in full swing, bandits may increase their attempts to rob bank machines but he assured the police has also strategised a plan to deal with such incidents.
