The proof of the pudding is in the eating

THE EDITOR: No two words about it, we all know that former Prime Minister, Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar, will win the United National Congress leadership elections. Christine Newallo-Hosein, will not even make up half of the curtain that her presence provides for UNC political window dressing.

What we are waiting to see (me alone maybe) is how many dedicated UNC supporters are going to brave rain and sun to turn out to vote on Sunday November 26. TT people are notorious for just disappearing if it is not a general election.

And even then, some of us are too lazy to be bothered. With an alleged 100,000 registered UNC supporters at least 50% should come out in acknowledgement of all the alleged special attention they received from the Partnership government 2010-2015.

At the last leadership showing opponents to Mrs Persad-Bissessar racked up a mere fraction of her tally of 18,000 votes. Do we need the fine print? No. The UNC prides itself as being on firm ground to take over from the Peoples National Movement government, “tomorrow self,” as we say in local parlance.

The UNC is not in government.

Nobody dare say that they are giving away free food cards, no jobs, no money wrapped in jerseys, no nothing.

They are coming out ‘cold turkey’ on Sunday.

Some few people may be of the view that the Congress of the People is/was merely an off shoot of the UNC. On Sunday November 19, under 600 persons bothered to vote. TT is a place where sometimes, even your own children could make you shame.

It would be indeed pleasant if even 45,000 UNC supporters answer the political call to proof of continuing interest in the fortunes of their political party.

The proof of the political pudding is in the eating.
