Bar owners in court for housing gaming machines

Four bar owners in south-western Trinidad are expected to appear in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court today for failing to pay taxes for gaming machines found at their respective establishments.

The business people, two of whom are women, are between the age of 35 and 55 years. Police said the bar owners were using the premises as common gaming houses. According to a report, Snr Supt Adams and Supt Phillip coordinated an exercise which began on Friday at 5 pm and ended at 2 am the following day.

Under the supervision of Insp Subero and including Sgt Jaggernauth and Cpl Rajkumar, police went to the bars and found the gaming machines. Police said checks with the owners/operators revealed that taxes were not paid in accordance with the Gambling and Betting Act

Based on Chapter 11:19, Section 4 of the Act, a person is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of $1,500 or to 12 months imprisonment if he/she, being the owner/ occupier or having the use temporarily or otherwise thereof, keeps or uses any premises as a common gaming house.
