An early morning accident in San Fernando yesterday claimed the life of a driver and up to press time his co-worker was fighting for his life at hospital.

Police identified the dead man as Ian Smith, 25, of Polver Street, Morvant. He was a worker at Linda’s Bakery. The survivor, Asfa Joseph, 21, of Carenage, sustained multiple injuries. Joseph was listed in a critical condition at San Fernando General Hospital.

According to police reports, at about 5 am, Smith was driving one of the company’s Mitsubishi trucks with his co-worker in Cross Crossing. Police said shortly after the truck exited the ramp of the interchange, it crashed into the concrete barriers of the Cross Crossing bridge. On impact, the truck spun several times before it came to a halt. Smith died at the scene while Joseph was taken to hospital.

Police said the men were on the job at the time of the accident.

No one else was injured and San Fernando police visited the scene.

Hours after the fatal accident, the company via its official facebook page posted a statement.

It stated: “It is with deep sadness that Linda’s Bakery announces the passing of one of our drivers in an early morning road accident. Our team is shocked and saddened to have been awakened to news of the accident which involved one of our trucks and two staff members.”

The post stated that the company is working to give its “full support” to family members.

It added: “The accident is under investigation and we thank everyone who has reached out to us from the scene and on social media networks.”
