Kublalsingh predicts bigger floods

Highway Reroute Movement leader Dr Wayne Kublalsingh is predicting an increase in flooding and water borne diseases due to changes in the global weather patterns. He said the nation has not been told the truth about recent floods which crippled parts of south Trinidad.

“It is not rubbish in the river and old fridge and old stove that is causing this. It is extreme weather events and this is going to be aggravated in the future, next year, the following year. This will lead to, in high areas, landslides and landslips; and in the low areas, lots of water in the system and the water has to go somewhere,” Kublalsingh said.

“This is not a prediction, it’s a certainty,” Kublalsingh declared when asked whether he was predicting more floods. Addressing a media conference at the OWTU’s office in San Fernando, Kublalsingh said one of the main causes for the recent floods was changes to the Orinoco River, heavily influenced by global warming.

He said the giant South American river was being affected by melting Andean mountain glaciers which increased the volume of water in the Orinoco River basin with an increased surge in the Columbus Channel. “In the rainy season, this surge is rough and intrusive and at high tides, this water pelts up the large rivers of Trinidad with the Godineau and Oropouche rivers particularly susceptible to this flow,” Kublalsingh said.
