Man dies in prison

Michael George, 29, charged with the murder of Aaron Kim Goorachan, was found dead in his cell last Sunday. Pathologists at the Forensic Science Centre in St James, on Tuesday determined that he died from a series of blood clots, but relatives told Newsday they believe there is more to his death.

“The circumstances surrounding his death are very suspicious,” said a relative who asked not to be publicly identified. “It is even stranger, because he was due to reappear in court next week. ” Relatives said George was found lying face down in a cell. They were told of his death by prison officials and identified his body at the Centre on Tuesday.

A toxicology report was requested to ascertain the cause of the blood clots, but it is expected to be some weeks before the results are known. Until then, his relatives can only only speculate as to what caused his death. Family members last saw George on October 26, shortly after he was charged. Relatives said they were unable to visit him since then, because of work-to-rule conditions at the prisons after the murder of a prison officer.

Relatives told Newsday he was the last of five children. On September 21, at about 7.30 am, Goorachan was shot dead while heading to his workplace, the Couva Extended Care Centre. He was shot in the back. George appeared before a Couva magistrate and was expected to return to court next Monday.
