The United Kingdom travel advice that “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Trinidad and Tobago” reflects the fact that global terrorism is evolving and its threat on the country is real, says the British Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the United Nations, Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon.

Speaking with the media yesterday after signing a security memorandum of understanding on behalf of the UK with National Security Minister Edmund Dillon at Tower C, International Waterfront, Port of Spain, Lord Ahmad said travel advisories for 225 countries and territories were reviewed in May to bring clarity to the fact that global terrorism was “ever-evolving, ever-changing.”

Apart from heightened threats to common interests, he said, there were heightened threats to British interests around the world, “as we have seen” by the conflict that is raging in Syria and Iraq.

The review recommended using new and more specific language to describe the terrorist threat to ensure that British travellers are properly informed.

While the MOU signals commitment to global security, he said that already the UK was assisting TT in the reform of the criminal justice system and tackling corruption.
