Despite the hiccups over the past two weeks, Miss Universe TT Yvonne “Yvee” Clarke remained unfazed as she assured citizens that she remained positive as she continued to focus all her energies on bringing home the Miss Universe 2017 title.

“I am confident in my ability to succeed and this is the spirit I am going to carry with me to the competition. I am hoping to bring that crown home,” a confident Clarke said.

At the time she was speaking to reporters at the San Fernando City Corporation as she met with the city’s mayor, Junia Regrello. Clarke also confirmed that she was registered as a representative for TT and her sponsorship was taken care of despite any speculations.

“At this point, I choose to focus on being positive. I am focused on performing well and representing Trinidad and Tobago to the best of my ability. Yes, I am a little nervous but also extremely excited as I am looking forward to interact with girls from ninety different countries all over the world.”

The 28-year-old who hails from south Trinidad said that she had been involved in pageantry since the tender age of nine years. Presenting her with a bouquet of flowers, Regrello, in offering words of encouragement, told Clarke to continue to strive for excellence. “These challenges are tests of your character and makes you into the person you are supposed to be. Go out there and do what you have to do and that is your best,” he said.

The mayor also commended Clarke on how she handled the challenges that came her way. Almost a week ago, Clarke was stripped of her crown and the opportunity to represent the country. Local Miss Universe franchise holder Jennifer Douglas had stated that Clarke was disqualified due to a breach of her contract. Two days later, Clarke was reinstated.

Last Friday, soca star Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez, in a media statement, announced the decision by her company to pull their sponsorship.

Yesterday, Clarke also visited her alma mater Naparima Girls’ High School, San Fernando, where she was mobbed by the adoring students. She told them to always believe in themselves and stay focussed on their goals. “It does not matter how many times you fall down, you need to get back up and continue to believe that, with God, all things are possible. And once you are prepared and work hard, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to accomplish.”

She also encouraged the students to get engaged in extra curricular activities as they would contribute to their all round development.
