Lighthouse new look welcomed

THE EDITOR: I never thought I would see the day when the Port of Spain lighthouse — which marks the entrance to our country’s capital — would undergo such a wonderful makeover.

Whoever is responsible for that monument — whether the Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport, the National Trust or even the Port of Spain City Corporation — had left it rotting for roughly a decade. In that time it had become almost extinct, useless and quite frankly an embarrassment. The garbage left near the entrance as well as the dirty look of the structure itself was a real shame.

The clocks are also a welcome addition, giving the structure a new look. Thank goodness someone has taken up the mantle to restore this aging landmark. I hope this is now the start of a trend to make sure all of our landmarks are not left for dead. If the Government doesn’t have the funding to do this then by all means let the private sector do the job.
