La Forest: Guaya aiming for double glory

Guaya United coach Ron La Forest is aiming for success – both in League One and in the League Cup – as the 2017 TT Super League season nears its completion

Guaya defeated FC Santa Rosa 3-1 on Sunday, in a Round 19 match, at the Arima Velodrome to overtake the Arima-based club for the top spot.

Andrei Pacheco (17th minute), Kevin Jagdeosingh (42nd) and Carlon Hughes (70th) were the goal-getters for Guaya while Ryan Stewart (26th) responded for Santa Rosa.

Currently, Guaya have a two-point lead over Santa Rosa with three rounds remaining. In addition, Guaya will be facing Prisons FC in the final of the Caribbean Football Trust Limited (CFTL)-sponsored League Cup on November 18, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

In an interview yesterday, La Forest pointed out, “The mission this year was as much titles as possible, because of the sponsor that came on board, Hydro Tech. The mission was as much trophies as possible could be rewarded to (them), we’d welcome that. The League Cup is something we’re looking forward to also.”

The former national striker and youth team coach emphasised that the players will be guarding against complacency, as the title chase continues to heat up.

“We’re taking each game step by step,” La Forest said. “It ain’t finish until it finish. The hurdle in the way (on Sunday) was the Santa Rosa people, and we swept them aside, which is good for us and the community.

“But that don’t mean to say we’re sitting on our laurels and just take everybody else for granted. Thanks to the supporters, but we still have unfinished business to take care of.”

Looking back at Sunday’s game, La Forest said, “We were successful in terms of winning the game, it’s something that we wanted. Both teams have been chasing the title. It’s not that the (chase) has ended. It’s just one game that we played (on Sunday). It gave us that morale booster, in the sense that our head is in front again and we just got to keep our head in front.”
