Driver in fatal hit-and-run in Penal still on the run

The driver of the car which slammed into Penal couple Khemchan Roopnarine and his wife Patricia Ali on Sunday night, killing them on the spot, remains on the run.

However, a 44-year-old female friend of the driver is still being questioned by police in connection with the fatal crash at Penal Rock Road.

Family members were yesterday busy making preparations for the funeral of the couple. A service according to Christian rites is scheduled to be held today at their home from 2pm, after which they will be taken to the Batchyia Pubic Cemetery in Penal where they will be laid to rest side by side.

Shortly after 10pm on Sunday, 38-year-old Roopnarine and 36-year-old Ali were walking to their home when the driver of a white hatchback Tiida ploughed into them. Their sons Brandon, nine, and five-year-old Darrion, who were walking ahead of them, escaped unhurt.
