11-year-old girl shot in abdomen to undergo surgery

An 11-year-old girl is expected to undergo surgery today at the Eric Williams Medical Science Centre in Mt Hope, after she was shot in the abdomen on Saturday morning.

Police are still looking for the shooter who tried to storm a two-storey house at Boodram Street, Cunupia. Newsday was told, at about 2 am on Saturday an unknown gunman tried to break into the upper floor of the house by kicking open the double doors at the entrance, but did not succeed. He then tried to pull open the door but he only managed to break off a piece. He then stuck his gun through the hole and fired several shots. No one on the top floor was hurt, but a stray bullet went through the wooden floor and hit the girl downstairs.

The girl complained to her mother of a burning sensation and, when the mother checked, she realised the child had been shot.

She was taken to hospital where she was stabilised. Newsday was told doctors intended to do surgery on the child on Sunday but she was too weak, so they are waiting for her to regain her strength.
