Venezuelan woman jailed for illegal entry

A Venezuelan woman charged with entering the county illegally, was sentenced to three months in jail by a Chaguanas magistrate yesterday.

Carolina Foto Villar, 23, was taken before senior magistrate Joanne Connor to answer to the charge in the Chaguanas First Magistrate’s Court. She pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that she entered the country illegally on September 15, 2017.

The charge was laid by Cpl Howard of the Chaguanas Police Station.

The court heard that Villar entered the country at an unknown beach and not a place designated as a port of entry.

Villar was not represented by an attorney and through an interpreter, Moonilal Ragbir, the court heard that she was unemployed in her home country and came to Trinidad seeking a job. The court also heard that Villar is a mother of two. Her youngest child is two years old.
