Port of Spain will be the site of several renovation projects in the coming months, mayor Joel Martinez said on Wednesday, speaking to reporters at the opening of the Lara Promenade public convenience facilities.

Martinez revealed the public could look forward to similar projects, as plans were under way to beautify the city and enhance its visual appeal, starting with fountains in three squares, and expressed optimism that such projects would yield positive results.

“The city is doing a number of events, throughout the city. We are also looking at the restoration of the Memorial Park cenotaph, also at the fountains within Woodford Square, Lord Harris Square, Columbus Square, where we will re-energise those fountains to allow people to really enjoy the ambience of the city.” He said the new and improved promenade facilities, which include automatic hand-dryers, air-conditioning units and a stall to accommodate the differently-abled, cost within $400,000, but the fees for using them have not been increased.

“There is a cost of $1, the very nominal fee, and it really is to give some type of funding to be able to give temporary jobs and to buy a few things. It’s not enough in the real sense, but its designed to let somebody pay something.”

Asked if there would be a heightened police presence as the Christmas season approaches, Martinez confirmed this.
