Penal driver dies on North Coast Road

A 64-year-old truck driver from Penal was killed instantly when his brakes failed on the North Coast Road, Maracas, near the police station.

According to reports, Ranjit Ramkissoon, of Quinam Road, was driving his sanitation truck west when his brakes failed shortly after 7.30 am. He tried to stop the truck by crashing it into the side of a hill but it overturned. Ramkissoon was pinned inside and killed. The road was blocked as a result and traffic backed up. Undertakers removed the body shortly after 9 am.

Police from the Maracas Bay station contacted Ramkissoon’s relatives and the driver of a police wrecker cleared the road.

The death pushed the road fatality to 95, compared with 105 for the same period last year, which represents a ten per cent decrease.

Yesterday Brent Batson, co-ordinator of the Police Road Safety Project, said, “We are saddened by this loss of life, and if it is, as suggested by initial reports, that his brakes failed, it again highlights the importance of vehicle maintenance and pre-trip checks for mechanical integrity, especially when it relates to commercial vehicles such as trucks and taxis.”
