PSC: Merit list for top cop posts by Dec

The Police Service Commission (PSC) is confident that by December an order of merit list with the names of the highest-graded candidates for Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner will be forwarded to the President.

The names will then be sent to Parliament, where a Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner will be selected from among these nominees. The preferred candidates should be in office by year’s end.

Yesterday, a press release from the PSC said, “The commission is acutely aware of the importance of the selection exercise to the safety and security of the country and wants to assure all citizens that the process is thorough, rigorous, aligned with the laws of the country, and seeks to ensure that the best suited candidates are selected.

“We have already completed the initial screening of applicants and psychometric testing of candidates. Further assessments are ongoing and scheduled to continue in the month of November. The entire process is expected to be completed in December,” said PSC chairman Marie Therese Gomes.

The release also said the PSC remains committed to serving the nation’s interests and will maintain the highest levels of professionalism and integrity throughout the process. The commission said it also ensures that the confidentiality of all candidates and key stakeholders is also maintained.
