UPDATED STORY:

A woman claiming to be the mother of a 12-year-old boy (not ten as previously reported) suspected in the arson attack on a house on Monday, claims she is being threatened by residents of East Port of Spain where the incident occurred. One man was killed and another severely burnt.

The woman said her ex-husband has full custody of the child. She said she only learnt of the incident yesterday after reading the newspaper and felt inclined to reach out to the child’s father.

“He didn’t call me to say anything. I only found out what exactly happened when I went to the place where it was said to have occurred. I’m very sorry and distraught that all of this happened.”

She said although she has expressed her sympathies to the family of 24-year-old Akeil Phipps, who died from burns sustained in the fire, she has been receiving death threats.

“People have called my phone and said if they can’t get my son they will get me. It’s a very trying time right now and I am just asking God to try and help me through it.”

Yesterday, acting ASP and Public Information Officer of the Police Service Inspector Michael Jackman confirmed an investigation has been launched into the family and living conditions of the boy.

“Of course in all matters that reveal some form of criminal liability (and) in any matter that involves children, their welfare and their well-being, the police will normally get involved and conduct an investigation.”

Jackman said he was unable to say what offence the boy would likely be charged with or if he would be charged at all. Newsday also spoke to Warren Phipps, father of the deceased man, who said his brother Sheldon Phipps who was also burnt during the incident, has been discharged from the Port of Spain General Hospital and is recovering.

The elder Phipps confirmed the boy’s mother has attempted to reach out to him and his family.
