Tyrelle Romuald Hunte has a talent for building cars and trains with his toys.

“I want to become an automotive design engineer because I like to build things,” says the eight-year-old.

His interest to become an engineer came from watching the British children’s television series Thomas and Friends. “Thomas is my favourite train because he is a leader and he is also called a tank engine.”

Tyrelle, who lives in Santa Cruz, wants to travel the world as an engineer building and improving cars for the benefit of others. He attends Febeau Government Primary School, San Juan, where he is one of the top students in his standard two class.

“My favourite subjects in school are mathematics and social studies, but I enjoy maths more because I love numbers and counting them.” He has won many prizes for reading and mathematics.

Tyrelle is also interested in foreign languages and began learning Spanish in second year. He wants to speak Spanish so he can visit countries like Venezuela.

Swimming is one of his passions and he goes to the pool at Centre of Excellence, Macoya, with his school every Wednesday and has been doing so for three years. He received a certificate of achievement in 2014 for swimming for the category of Water Babies One.

Tyrelle likes to run too and celebrates being the fifth fastest runner among his school friends.

His talents include being a drummer and for the past four years, he has played with the St John the Baptist RC Church choir.

“When I first started I would beat the wrong rhythm but when I practised I got better.” His favourite rhythm to beat comes from the gospel song Glory to Glory by Fred Hammond. He is a soca fan too.

“My favourite artiste is Machel Montano because I like the rhythm of his songs especially the song he made with Bunji Garlin.” The song is Buss Head.

“I also want to become a musician so that I can learn to play the guitar and drums for a large audience like the crowds Machel performs for.”

How does he manage his time after school? Tyrelle plays with his brother Tyrese, five, and two-year-old sister Thais who are always eager to help him create a new model toy train. He is encouraged in his pursuits by his mother, Simone Henry-Hunte, and his father, Shurland Hunte, who both help him with his homework. His extended family and schoolteachers also support him.

Although he has cut back on the time he spends watching television, Tyrelle’s favourite show is Spiderman, “Because he is the best crime-fighter and most people love him.”

And, for all of his pursuits, Tyrelle enjoys family time most, especially KFC dinners on a Friday evening.
