Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis yesterday dismissed Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal’s vow to complain to the Police Commissioner and the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) about her reading a search warrant into the Parliament’s records. Robinson-Regis, who is also Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives, read the warrant during her contribution to the budget debate in the House last Thursday.

Speaking with Newsday during a meeting of the House’s Standing Finance Committee at Tower D of the Port-of-Spain International Waterfront Centre, Robinson-Regis declared, “Dr Moonilal is talking rubbish.”

The minister said the warrant was on social media and Moonilal himself spoke about it at a United National Congress public meeting. She also said TV6 journalist Mark Bassant, “has also spoken about this warrant.”

Robinson-Regis, who is also an attorney, said, “Once a warrant has been issued, it is for the information of all police officers.” Earlier during the committee meeting, Moonilal told reporters that the warrant is not protected by parliamentary privilege.

He further alleged that only police are authorised to read warrants. Moonilal said “WPC Robinson-Regis” would have to explain to the commissioner and the PCA why she read the warrant in Parliament. Moonilal said he is surrounded by police all the time. He said neither he nor his property have have been searched.

Referring to comments made by Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young at a news conference earlier in the day, Moonilal said, “I verily believe that they misrepresented the process of getting an HDC (Housing Development Corporation) home so they could procure a search warrant allegedly with my name on it.”
