The 62-year-old brother of joint Chutney Soca Monarch Winner Omardath Maraj was found chopped to death at his Las Lomas #2 home shortly before midnight on Sunday.
Basdeo Maraj was found with severe chop wounds about the body by his son Omesh 19, shortly after 11.45 pm on Sunday.
Omesh last saw his father alive around 7 pm when he left home on Sunday to lime with friends. When he returned at around 11.45 pm on Sunday he discovered the house broken into and ransacked.
He alerted neighbours who found Maraj lying motionless in one of the bedrooms with chop wounds about the body. The teenager alerted neigbours and relatives and officers of the Las Lomas Police post were contacted.
Officers went to the scene and cordoned off the area. The body of Maraj was viewed by a District Medical Officer and ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre.
Maraj’s brother Omardath who is in Miami fulfilling commitment to perform his many Chutney hits confirmed yesterday via Facebook that Basdeo was his brother and he urged family members to remain strong. Maraj was attempting to return to Trinidad to comfort his family and to assist with funeral arrangements.
Good morning family n friends for all those who trying to call me, yes it's true they kill my brother last night in his...
He said that the news of his brother’s death was a big shock and he never thought that crime would have reached his own family and he was hoping that the perpetrator of the vicious attack would be found and brought to justice. Maraj shot to fame with his popular hit Ramsingh Sharma during the Carnival period earlier this year.
Savita Maraj, a daughter of the murder victim, said that her brother Omesh has been deeply affected by the murder of their father and is being monitored closely. She said that her parents separated more than 14 years ago and they all lived with their father and shared an excellent relationship with him.
According to Savita her father who is a truck driver was looking forward to Divali on Wednesday and on Sunday she prepared a grocery and market list for him to purchase items to cook on Divali day.
Savita said that her father was not a limer and was loved by neighbours and friends. She pointed out that the area where her father lived was considered a quiet close knit community and now that he has been murdered, there is an uneasiness in the Las Lomas #2 area and residents are now afraid to leave their windows and doors open in the aftermath of the murder.
She said that although her father’s house was ransacked, nothing appeared to be stolen and she is bewildered why someone wanted to kill her father. “Daddy never left any money in the house, he had no enemies, we had no quarrel over any property so this has me totally bewildered as to why this murder has taken place”.
She said that she never thought that Divali this year would be such a sad occasion because she too was preparing to have a fun-filled day with friends and relatives and now everything has been dashed with the murder of her father.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau revisited the scene of the murder and statements were obtained from several villagers.
The murder of Maraj pushed the murder toll to 390 for the year thus far.
