Have a heart,taxi drivers

THE EDITOR: I stand in solidarity with the young man who did his quiet and peaceful protest to oppose the $1 fare increase by Maloney taxi drivers. He stood up for himself and also the residents of Maloney, even as he was threatened and disrespected.

I appeal to the drivers to be a bit more caring. The fare increase is unreasonable. The cost of living has not only increased for taxi drivers but also for us the residents. We live in a community where single parents are trying to provide for their children. The dollar increase will make a big difference for these families, especially those with schoolchildren.

These drivers offer a much needed service but most of them are PH taxis. There is no association or body to consent to a legitimate fare increase for the routes. While some drops may be worth the increase, certainly not the short drops. With the increase, people will have no choice but to walk, which will make it even more difficult for the drivers. It’s an honest living yes, but please have a heart.
