Cops without badges, months after graduation

More than 40 police officers are yet to receive their identification badges, four months after they graduated from the Police Training Academy, this according to a constable who says that a lack of proper identification can create problems for officers as they interact with citizens on the beat.

Newsday was contacted by a constable who expressed concern over the lack of proper identification to the new officers. He said that despite reassurances from senior officials, there appears to be no plans to provide the officers with their badges anytime soon.

“Forty seven overall, 20 went to the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), and 27 went to the Transit Police Unit.

It’s long overdue, we’re going on four months working as officers and we don’t have any form of identification.”

Newsday spoke to Public Information Officer Acting ASP Michael Jackman who said that the official identification of officers ought to be provided after the passing out ceremony and did not know why they weren’t provided with it.

In exercises, police officers have seized fake police and army uniforms believed to be used by criminals to gain the trust of the public.
