THE Trinidad and Tobago women’s volleyball team will face Dominica in their opening match of the Senior Women Continental Championship World Championship Qualification Tournament Finals Group C at the National Cycling Centre in Couva at 7 pm, tonight.

Group C will feature TT, Dominica, Costa Rica and Mexico in the tournament which runs from today until Sunday.

The top two teams in the group will qualify for the 2018 World Women’s Volleyball Championship in Japan from September 29 to October 20.

Yesterday, TT members Channon Thompson and Jelicia Ross spoke about the team’s chances at a McDonald’s/National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) Happy Meal Books Programme launch at McDonald’s, Cipriani Boulevard, Port of Spain.

The national team was at McDonald’s reading to children as part of a literacy initiative which was organised by NALIS and McDonald’s.

Thompson said she is optimistic TT can qualify for the World Championships for the first time. “We are really looking forward to qualifying for the first time in Trinidad and Tobago and make history for volleyball in Trinidad and Tobago,” Thompson said.

Thompson says the recent 2-1 victory by the TT football team over USA on Tuesday has inspired the national volleyballers. “We are definitely extremely proud of them and we are looking forward to doing the same,” she said.

Ross said TT are familiar with Costa Rica and Mexico, but Dominica are relatively unknown to them.

“We know the least about Dominica, however we have played against Mexico and Costa Rica for years, probably 11 or 12 years and we know both teams thoroughly,” Ross said.

“We know we have the opportunity and we will definitely grab that opportunity to beat them and qualify for Japan next year.”
