Five held for arms and ammo

Five people were arrested in two unrelated incidents by police who seized two firearms and 29 rounds of ammunition on Thursday.

According to a release from the TT Police Service (TTPS) Public Affairs Unit, three brothers were arrested and a pistol seized by Four Roads Police during an exercise between 2 am and 6 am.

The officers, who are from Maraval CID, Western Division Task Force and the TTPS Canine Unit executed a search warrant at a house at Simeon Road, Petit Valley and found a Springfield semi-automatic pistol loaded with 16 rounds of nine-millimetre calibre ammunition. A 21-year-old man along with his two brothers aged 25 and 26 were arrested.

They were taken to the West End Police Station and charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. The trio was scheduled to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate yesterday.

Also, in an exercise which took place in Valencia, two San Fernando men were arrested. Police said between 1.45 pm and 3.30 pm, officers carried out a roadblock along the Eastern Main Road, Valencia. They stopped and searched dozens of vehicles and their occupants in the process.

Officers while searching a vehicle, found an Astra pistol and 13 rounds of nine-millimetre calibre ammunition. The two occupants of the car, aged 18 and 23, were arrested and taken to the Valencia Police Post where they were cautioned and charged. They were expected to appear before a Sangre Grande magistrate yesterday.
