Cardi B loves soca and has famously done YouTube videos with Uncle Ellis, at left, and has mimed some of Destra Garcia's hits.

She has become the first female rapper to top the Billboard charts, “without the assistance of any other credited artist in nearly 19 years.”

But it is not this fact that makes it special alone, but the fact that she is of Caribbean parentage [her mother is Trinidadian and father, Dominican] which makes it even sweeter. What also adds a bit more pleasure to the pot, is that the rapper also loves her soca, having famously done YouTube videos with Uncle Ellis and mimed some of Destra Garcia’s hits.

Entertainment news spread around the globe on September 25 that Belcalis Almanzar (Cardi B) had become the first female rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart without the assistance of any other credited artist in nearly 19 years. This move knocked Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do to the number three spot. The news of her move to the top spot was chronicled by the New York Times.

Billboard.com said the rapper claimed the top spot with her debut hit Bodak Yellow. Her debut hit moved from number two to the number one spot on the Hot 100 chart dated October 7.

Billboard.com added, “Bodak, released on The KSR Group/Atlantic Records, makes Cardi B (born Belcalis Almanzar, in the Bronx, New York) just the second female rapper to top the Hot 100 without any other billed artists, following Lauryn Hill’s first solo Hot 100 entry (apart from the Fugees), Doo Wop (That Thing), for two weeks beginning with its Nov 14, 1998, debut at No 1.

“Cardi B is only the fifth female rapper ever to lead the Hot 100 at all. After Hill, Lil’ Kim ruled for five weeks in 2001 with Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk on Lady Marmalade; Shawnna reigned as featured on Ludacris’ Stand Up, which topped the Dec 6, 2003, chart; and Iggy Azalea’s introductory Hot 100 hit, Fancy, featuring Charli XCX, led for seven weeks in 2014.”

Cardi B’s hit has also spent six weeks at number one on the hot rap songs chart and a fourth on at the top of the hot/R&B hip hop songs chart, Billboard.com said.

As news of her achievement hit the ground, Destra Garcia posted a video on the day the news spread of Cardi B, miming and singing along to the soca artistes’ 2015 hit, Lucy.

Cardi B has also visited TT many times.

The rapper who grew up in the Bronx, New York, first began a career as an exotic dancer and then became an Internet celebrity through Instagram. She also became well-known through VH1’s reality TV series, Love & Hip Hop: New York.

She signed to Atlantic Records in February this year.
