A father and son are both dead after they were ambushed by gunmen in Picton Road, Laventille.
The two men have been identified as Fitzroy Daniel, 65, and Jabari Daniel, 25.
They were both said to be from Snake Valley, Laventille.
Reports say that the shooting started just before 1 am as the two were driving along Picton Road.
The two men were said to be driving along the road, when as they reached Pump Trace their vehicle was blocked off by armed gunmen.
As the two men saw the gunmen, Jabari, who was driving the vehicle, got out and started running away. The gunmen shot up the car, hitting Fitzroy several times, and chased Jabari, shooting him as well before escaping.
Both father and son were shot in their chests and heads.
Police and emergency services were alerted and the two were taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital.
Fitzroy was pronounced dead on arrival, and later, despite doctors’ best efforts, Jabari succumbed to his wounds.
Up to press time investigators were still trying to find a motive behind the fatal shooting. Earlier reports indicated that the two men were visiting family members who were involved in an accident on Picton Road earlier that day, however police were unable to confirm or deny whether the two incidents were connected.
The bodies of both father and son are expected to be taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James, where an autopsy is expected to be performed.
The murder toll for the year now stands at 279.
